It all started as my husband and I approached retirement, ready for a new chapter yet uncertain about the road ahead. Retirement is a time of both excitement and challenge, and as we faced it, our lives were set for a major shift. Coming from very different backgrounds—him a country boy and me a small-town “city” girl—we found ourselves united in a shared dream of self-sufficiency, each of us with a unique perspective on how to make it happen.

In over 40 years of marriage, we’d never gardened, preserved food, or prepared for emergencies, but we wanted to change that. Our journey began with a small garden in 2020, a place that quickly became my sanctuary. That little plot of earth (which has since quadrupled in size) turned into my prayer garden—a peaceful retreat where I discovered the joy of growing our own food. Knowing exactly how our food was grown, what went into it, and being able to nourish ourselves with it was deeply fulfilling. From that first garden, we expanded our homestead to include chickens, grew our own medicinal herbs, and learned how to create organic remedies. Living in a hurricane zone, I even taught myself to use household items for emergency preparedness.

This journey has shown me that we are truly stronger together. I feel blessed to have learned how to tap into nature’s resources for health and healing and feel called to share this knowledge with others. My hope is that by sharing what I’ve learned, I can encourage you to try a little something in your own home that brings peace over panic and helps you feel prepared.

As it says in Jeremiah 29:11, “I know the plans I have for you, plans for good and not to harm you, plans for hope and a future.”

Blessings to you and yours,
Anne
